We have lots to share, including a new "GIVE $20" Initiative.
We are excited about our next Virtual Book Club, slated for September. We think you'll get much more from the discussion if you've read the book beforehand, hence the ample advance notice.
In this issue, you'll read about some wonderful events, an admirable professional, an opportunity to learn best practices from exemplary employers, and a new volunteer initiative for Companies That Care.
Here's to summer!
Best Regards,
Marci Koblenz

| LEADERSHIP GURU and WHARTON FACULTY MEMBER STEW FRIEDMAN JOINS SEPTEMBER 15th VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB |
|
On September 15th, from 12-1 CT, we will discuss: Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life.

We will be joined by the author, Stew Friedman, for what promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking discussion.
In this book, Friedman presents his "four-way" win method that enables a leader to find mutual value at work, at home, in the community, and personally. Using exercises, stories, charts, and lists, the author describes Total Leadership as a program for becoming a leader who acts with authenticity by determining what is important, who acts with integrity by respecting all parts of his life, and who acts with creativity by experimenting to find new solutions.
Claiming leadership can and must be learned, the author offers step-by-step instructions for using his principles to produce stronger business results while having a richer life and creating opportunities for others.

| VOLUNTEER COORDINATION GETS A BOOST |
|
| Companies That Care welcomes James Lillis to our team.
James learned about Companies That Care through his employer, Northern Trust, liked what he learned and decided to volunteer. As he says, "A nonprofit that encourages ethical business practices seems very necessary in light of the business culture that lead to the current financial crisis".
James is bringing in volunteers to help Companies That Care with various tasks such as marketing, Federal Application For Student Aid instruction, grant writing, fundraising, and technical assistance. He is making sure that we match volunteers' interests and Companies That Care's needs.
We are holding volunteer orientations every six weeks to introduce the volunteers to our program managers and staff members and get them started on their assigned tasks. The first volunteer meeting will be June 17th.
Welcome and thanks, James! |
| WE'RE IN THE TIMES: CHECK IT OUT!! |
|
| On May 19th the Honor Roll announcement appeared in the New York Times, along with a nice story about Center for Companies That Care and two of our Honor Roll companies.
The ways our Honor Roll companies invest in their employees and serve their community make a difference and counteract all of the employment and employer negativity with which we get bombarded these days.

Free informational webinars about the process begin in August. |
AIM HIGH BOWLS A STRIKE & GIVES BACK
|
|
|
In April, AIM High students, their mentors, and supporters of the program, bowled and bonded over gutter balls and strikes. In addition to raising money for AIM High, a good time was had by all!

This past month, in conjunction with Terrific Tales, students and mentors visited local elementary schools to read to students and donate books to their classroom libraries. The teachers were quite impressed with our students and welcomed us back in the future. Our students were excited to experience the ''other side'' of a mentoring relationship by reaching out to younger children in the community.

| COMMUNITY SYMPOSIUM and BONNIE DAYAN AWARD WINNER |
|
|
On May 18-19 we came together as a community to celebrate and educate during our bi-annual Symposium.
- We heard from Lee Rhyant, Lockheed Martin GM, about Lockheed Martin's commitment to being a company that cares
- We recognized what Honor Roll employers do that makes them worthy of the distinction. Click here to order a copy of our Best Practices book that highlights what thirty-seven employers from around the country are doing to demonstrate the 10 Characteristics of a Company That Cares.
- We learned that the CEO and HR VP at WellStar were so moved by our recognition event last year that they developed and successfully implemented an entire campaign to double their margins from 3% to 6% ($38 M) around Characteristic 10, Consider the Human Toll when Making Business Decisions. They achieved their goal without laying anyone off and they are the only hospital system (12,000 employees) in Atlanta not to have layoffs this year.
- We honored Bonnie Shelor with the Bonnie Dayan Award which was established in memory of an executive who had demonstrated unwavering commitment to ensuring her family-owned company invested in its employees and served it communities. Bonnie is SVP, HR from Honor Roll organization Bon Secours Richmond Health System. Congratulations, Bonnie.
