Welcome to Spring (at least in some parts of the country)! We have many things to report in this issue: lots of upcoming events, (including a contest),  highlights of the "goings on" with AIM High, and a recent editorial written by Center for Companies That Care.

Please take note that it is never too late to participate in CAREDAYS08, Terrific Tales. We are pleased about the involvement we have, but know that we could do so much more to create classroom libraries in schools not fortunate enough to be able to afford books for students to read in their spare time.

We look forward to hearing from you with input, suggestions, words of wisdom...just write.

UPCOMING EVENT: VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB

May 20, 2008, 12-1pm Central TimeCathedral Within

The Cathedral Within: Transforming Your Life by Giving Something Back

by Bill Shore

We will inform you about our guest speaker in our reminder note.

In this wise and inspiring book, social entrepreneur Bill Shore shows us how to make the most of life and do something that counts. Like the cathedral builders of an earlier time, the visionaries described in this memoir share a single desire: to create something that endures. The extraordinary people Shore has met on his travels represent a new movement of citizens who are tapping into the vast resources of the private sector to improve public life. Among them are:

-- Gary Mulhair, who has created unprecedented jobs and wealth at the largest self-supporting human-service organization of its kind, Pioneer Human Services of Seattle.

-- Nancy Carstedt of the Chicago Childrenís Choir, which provides thousands of children their first introduction to music.

-- Geoffrey Canada, who has made a safe haven for more than four thousand inner-city children in New York City, from Hell's Kitchen to Harlem.

These leaders, and many others described in these pages, have built important new cathedrals within their communities, and by doing so they have transformed lives, including their own.

We are thrilled to announce our First Annual Dinner.
We will host "Are You Smarter Than a 9th grader"...a game show that will pit area CEOs against AIM High students. Scholarships and internships are at stake.

Please mark your calendars and think about who you want to invite to attend with you!

We hope you'll join us for what promises to be a meaningful and FUN evening.

In conjunction with the Dinner, to celebrate the AIM High Education Initiative, enable enhancements of our other current programs, and to prepare for our future, Center for Companies That Care is hosting its first fundraiser, an online Silent Auction. Watch for further details.

And, even if you can't attend, there are plenty of opportunities to be a sponsor. Please click here to see the sponsorship opportunities.

CAREDAYS08: TERRIFIC TALES
CAREDAYS - no year - logo

It's not too late to participate in Terrific Tales.

Many companies are already participating in this year's CAREDAYS. We have a goal of providing 1,000 classroom libraries over the next three year. This is a lofty goal, but one we know we can achieve with your help. We'll report on our progress in next month's newsletter.

In the meantime, the need has no deadline. So, please click on the above link to the Center for Companies That Care website for all the information you need to know in order to participate in this worthwhile activity. We have done the work to identify age-appropriate books; identify schools in your area in need of classroom libraries; and suggest ways in which you can raise money to buy books and help kids learn.

You will have the opportunity to contribute books, or funds for books, to seed classroom libraries in schools where the notion of a classroom library is unheard of.

Please call Center for Companies That Care with questions at 312-661-1010.
AIM High Overview and Update

Center for Companies That Care created the AIM High Education Initiative to ensure that vulnerable, low-income students, graduate from high school and college, and are prepared for tomorrow's workplace. For more information on AIM High, click here.AIM HIGH LOGO

This month we are preparing for our Take a Mentor To School Day on May 1, 2008. Our students will host their mentors in THEIR environment.

AIM High students have also celebrated Terrific Tales by reading to children at neighboring schools and donating books to their classroom libararies.
